This ultimate comparison was compiled based on the research of our seasoned experts and the top independent labs in the world so that you could make an informed decision.

We follow the work of four labs that regularly release detailed reports: AV-Test Institute based in Germany, MRG-Effitas, and SE Labs found in the UK as well as AV-Comparatives based in Austria.

AV-Test independent IT security institute in Germany says that the total number of registered malware has grown from 65 million to over 1 billion in the last nine years. In the last year alone, they discovered more than 100 million new viruses and malicious programs.

One of the fastest growing trends is ransomware. These attacks can be extremely costly. For example, an attack involving the NotPetya ransomware cost shipping firm Maersk more than $200 million.

As you can see, high-grade protection is more critical than ever before.

In this head-to-head battle, you’ll see the security products, features, and tools both companies offer. We look at how they stack up against each other regarding malware protection, system performance, user interface, cost, and more.

Here are the most important factors that we’ve compared:

  • Protection
  • Performance
  • Usability
  • Features
  • Pricing

You need to be able to protect yourself against any digital threats, so you don’t have to deal with these kinds of problems ever in your life.

So let’s see which competitor does it better.

A quick overview of the results

If you’re not too keen on all the nerdy stats or just in a bit of a rush, we have compiled a handy summary of the results.

  • Protection

In the last tests, Webroot showed some quite poor results, while Bitdefender succeeded with 100%, both in protection and detection.

  • Performance

Both software showed less than average and also some better than average results in different tests.

  • Usability

Both products offer easy to use user interfaces. Both also had some issues with false reporting. Bitdefender's results were still a lot better.

  • Features

Webroot and Bitdefender offer anti-malware and VPN features, but the list is longer for Bitdefender. Including some performance enhancers, for example.

  • Pricing

Both products offer individual and bundle options. The more you pay, the more you get. Still, Bitdefender gives you the best bang for the buck.

A short verdict

Bitdefender is better than Webroot because of its protection, usability, features and pricing. Both have their ups and downs when it comes to performance.

Detailed results

If our short overview didn’t cut it and you need some information to make a decision, we have a lot more to offer. Let’s dive into the details and see all the test results. We put Webroot and Bitdefender head-to-head in all the categories using data gathered by our experts and test results of top independent testing facilities.

So let’s dig in.

Protection

Protection is absolutely the most crucial part of any antivirus software. After all, it is the reason why you’d want to have it on your computer. In the last tests run by independent test facilities, one of the competitors performed a lot better than the other.

Usually we’d like to use information from at least two labs, but the only lab that tests both Webroot and Bitdefender is AV-Test. Let’s check the results.

In the last tests, AV-Test put Webroot up against 307 samples of 0-day malware attacks and 2428 samples of widespread malware during a four week period. Bitdefender was put up against 402 samples of 0-day malware attacks and 20606 samples of malware during the same period.

Webroot showed quite a lousy result protecting only against 66.5% of threats. Bitdefender, on the other hand, defended the computer like a hero, achieving a full 100%.

Webroot performed a lot better in detection tests with a 98,9% result. It still isn’t anything to brag about as it’s a result below the industry average. Bitdefender, once again, showed a perfect 100% score.

These results make it easy to call Bitdefender the winner of this category. If you’re looking for good security, you should definitely opt for Bitdefender.

Winner: Bitdefender

Performance

If keeping your computer comes with the price of it slowing down, the trouble isn’t worth it. That is why antivirus software’s performance is another crucial aspect to keep in mind when choosing which one to buy.

In some cases, browsing everyday websites and opening standard files can be a real problem. This is why we put the competitors head-to-head to see which one is faster. Let’s see the results so you could avoid any issues.

AV-Test lab research shows that Webroot performed a little slower than the industry average in a few of the tests. It may cause some problems when downloading or installing applications.

The performance of Bitdefender was better when installing applications, but a lot worse when launching websites or copying files.

As you can see both software have their problems, as well as upsides.

Winner: It’s a tie

Usability

The usability of any antivirus software can be measured in two aspects. The first is its interface and ease-of-use. The second is the software’s false reporting. Error notifications that start popping up each time you open a perfectly virus-free photo or document prevent you from doing anything useful on a computer.

First, let’s compare the interfaces.

Webroot creates a strong presence with dark green colors. The 3D effects of buttons and patches make the design seem a bit outdated. Still, the layout is intuitive, and information easy to understand.

On the top left part of the application window, you can see the status of your computer. A scanning option is available as well. In addition, you can see when the last scan was done and when the next is scheduled.

The right side of the window consists of information about used features. You can see which features are turned on and which are not, as well as other settings. For PC Security, there is a button for Realtime Shield, Web Shield, and Firewall.

If you click on Identity Protection, Utilities, or My Account, you can see further details in each section. For advanced settings, look up in the right corner of the window.

Webroot User Interface

Bitdefender offers a modern and easy to understand application with an intuitive design. Compared to some of the competitors, it has a bit more information on the home screen. Still, the important things stand out, and everything can be found in a heartbeat.

On the left side of the window, you can find a menu for different modules.

The first is the dashboard that is basically the home screen and gives you an overview of everything that is going on. There’s a big status message on the top, letting you know if your computer is safe. You can also start a quick scan there, open the VPN, safepay, and add other devices you wish to keep safe. There’s also an option to add a customized quick action.

If you check back to the right, you’ll find the protection module, where you can see if your device is protected and if the program is up to date. You are also able to start a quick scan or a vulnerability scan from there.

If you go through the options on the left, you are presented with privacy, utilities, notifications, your account, setting, and support.

Now let’s dive into false reporting.

During their tests, AV-Test laboratories also gather information on false reporting. The results show that Webroot had some serious trouble; in many cases, it thought that legitimate software was malware.

It can cause problems for people who are not too familiar with computer programs and just delete everything the antivirus detects as malicious. It may mean that essential applications and all their data get deleted during system scans.

Only 2 false reports showed up with Bitdefender, while Webroot had some serious problems.

As you can see, both contenders have a simple to use interface. Both products had some issues with false reporting, but Webroot’s results were one of the worst we’ve seen.

Features

Webroot and Bitdefender both offer a variety of security features to protect your digital life. But Bitdefender has a bit longer list of available options.

But first, let’s see what Webroot has to offer.

Webroot’s entry-level security product is called simply Webroot AntiVirus, and it is available for PCs and Macs. There are two options available – for one device and up to 3 devices. It prides itself in fast scan times and maintaining a small endpoint agent that takes up only 15 MB of drive space.

The mid-tier option is called Webroot Internet Security Plus, and it adds Identity Theft Protection to the list of features. It secures your usernames, account numbers, and other personal information against keyloggers, spyware, and other online threats targeting valuable personal data.

Internet Security Plus also lets you browse securely with real-time anti-phishing software. Whether you have a built-in webcam or an accessory, the software offers to safeguard against threats like Trojan malware hijacking it.

This option is available for 3 to 5 devices and works on tablets and smartphones as well. Although iOS device protection consists only of a secure browser, backup, and password management. It does not scan iOS apps to block malware.

The king of the lineup is Webroot Internet Security Complete, and it is available for 5 PCs, Macs, tablets, or smartphones.

The only thing that differs it from the last option is it’s 25 GB of cloud storage.

As the proliferation of online gaming retailers and in-game microtransactions opens up gamers to even more cyber threats, Webroot also has a specialized option made for gamers. Webroot AntiVirus for Gamers is designed to increase drive space, reduce access times, and improve gaming performance.

They even offer a performance guarantee. If you’re not convinced it protects without impacting gameplay, they’ll refund your purchase price within 70 days.

This option sadly only works with PCs.

The last addition to its lineup was Webroot WiFi Security that offers VPN protection for 3 to 5 Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS devices.

It maintains the online safety of your whole family at home and on public internet connections. You can feel secure and private work, share, bank, and browse.

Now let’s take a look at what Bitdefender has to offer.

Bitdefender offers a wide variety of security products for PC, Mac, Android, and iOS users. They also can provide multiple services for their clients, ranging from install and setup to computer tune-up.

Bitdefender’s entry-level product for PCs is called Bitdefender Antivirus Plus and it offers essential antivirus protection. The Mac version of the same product is called Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac. It promises absolute antivirus protection against all Mac-related threats.

The lightweight software also offers multi-layer ransomware protection, as well as blocks and removes annoying adware. The software prevents phishing and online fraud when shopping and browsing. You’ll also get a secure VPN for complete online privacy, including 200 MB of traffic a day.

The only thing the Mac version offers, that the PC version doesn’t, is the additional Time Machine protection for your backed-up files in case of a ransomware attack. If you compare the two products the other way, you can see that PC users get a lot more than the Mac users.

Here’s a list of all the features that are only available with the PC version:

  • Advanced Threat Defense that uses a technique called behavioral detection to closely monitor active apps. The moment it detects anything suspicious, it takes instant action to prevent infections.
  • A new cyber threat intelligence network threat prevention technologies that can analyze and identify suspicious network-level activities and block sophisticated exploits, malware, or botnet-related URLs, as well as brute force attacks.
  • Advanced aunty fraud filtering system warns you whenever you visit websites that may try to scam you.
  • Safe Files that can prevent unauthorized changes to your most important files. You can simply add folders to the watch list, and Bitdefender guards the files stored in them against ransomware and other types of malware. Only applications you explicitly trust are allowed to access your Safe Files.

These examples are only from the protection features. Bitdefender also offers performance features such as Global Protective Network, Battery Mode, as well as Game, Movie & Work Modes for PC. There is also safe online banking, WiFi security advisor, social network protection, vulnerability assessment, a Password manager, and a file shredder features available to PC users.

If you use more than one computer, the PC version is available for up to 10 devices. The Mac option can be purchased for only up to 3 devices. A 30-day free trial is available for both PC and Mac.

Bitdefender Internet Security is a mid-tier option available to only PC users. Its threat detection is designed to keep all Internet threats away.

It comes with a privacy firewall to block intrusions, filter your network traffic, and provides webcam and microphone protection to prevent eavesdropping.

A secure VPN with 200MB daily traffic is also included to protect your bank info, passwords, and downloads from hackers when you use public WiFi networks.

Bitdefender Internet Security also comes with parental control options so you can be sure that your children stay safe while browsing. Filter out inappropriate content and limit screen time. You can also log in remotely to Bitdefender Central to keep up with your kids.

Bitdefender also offers two different bundle options.

The first is Bitdefender Total Security and is available for PCs, Macs, Androids and iOS devices. You can choose between 5 and 10 device options.

The software bundle offers top-grade protection both off and online as well as a secure VPN for up to 200 MB of traffic a day and advanced parental controls.

It is basically everything Bitdefender has to offer to keep you safe.

There is also another bundle option available for people who are heavy computer users.

In addition to everything covered before, Bitdefender Premium Security offers you unlimited VPN traffic and priority support. So every time you have a question, you’ll get a quick answer. This bundle is only available for up to 10 devices.

Both companies offer the products needed for using your computer safely, offline, and online. Still, Bitdefender has a bit longer list of options to go with.

Pricing

Price plays an important role when deciding which option to go with. You have to take all the details into account to make the best decision that is best for you.

When investing in antivirus software, you are not purchasing an application but rather an ease-of-mind that your digital life is in safe hands.

So let’s compare the price points that offer you that peace. Here are the prices of both Webroot and Bitdefender products.

Webroot offers its products independently, depending on the time of purchase, you may get some discounts if you add multiple products to your cart. For the best all-around protection, it’s better to go with a complete package. If you go with only one pick, it may mean that some parts of your digital life may go unprotected.
